Fence & Signs
Overview
A permit is required for all new fences and signs and replacement of or modifications to existing fences* and signs. Please follow the instructions listed on the application for your specific application type. A permit is processed in approximately five business days. The review fee, use tax and signature must be provided when permit is issued. For more information on Fence & Sign Permits, please download the
Fence & Sign Permits Information Guide.
*An ordinance effective September 10, 2012 (Ordinance No. 2012-O-16) amends the zoning code to exempt from a fence permit the replacement of existing fences in the same location, at the same height, and using the same type of materials. If you are unsure whether or not a permit is needed for your specific job, contact the Current Planning Division.
Please note City Council adopted a new Land Development Code ("LDC") April 19, 2010 and an official zoning map August 15, 2011. With the adoption of an official Zoning Map, the new LDC was made effective September 18, 2011 for all fence permits and temporary sign permits.
The provisions for signs other than temporary signs in the new LDC are reserved for properties that have been zoned in accord with the new LDC; with the exception of temporary signs, properties that remain zoned under the legacy LDC are subject to the sign regulations of the legacy LDC. Please refer to the
Land Development Code for more information and to the links below for specific regulations for fence and sign permits.
Fees & Applications
The Fence and Sign Permits review fee is based on the project valuation. However, there are minimum fees for both fence and sign permits, as follows:
- Fence Permit: $20 minimum
- Sign Permit: $50 minimum
The City collects the City and County use tax on the building and construction materials at the time of permit issuance.
