Many communities, including Centennial, are discovering that “green is good”; that a vibrant public parks and open space system, well-connected by walking and biking trails and routes, can promote public health and offer a competitive advantage in the marketplace as communities compete for skilled workers and well-paying jobs.

Funding

The City's park, open space, trails and recreation program is funded by a 1/4 cent Arapahoe County sales tax, which a portion is shared-back to the City each year.  The program started in 2003 and was re-authorized in 2011 through 2023.  Additionally, the City receives an annual allocation of Colorado Conservation Trust Funds(CTF) from the State Lottery. The City is also eligible for grants from Arapahoe County and Great Outdoors Colorado and received $2.38 million in grants during 2010 & 2011.  Since the inception of the City these funding sources, combined with partner matching funds, have generated $20 million to acquire open space and improve parks and trails.
